To keep up with the high-speed demands of the digital age, more and more consumers are using broadband connections in their homes. As these consumers add PCs, they need a simple, cost-effective way to extend their high-speed connections to other rooms in the house without running new wires.
Many service providers have tried to avoid installing physical connections by rolling out wireless home networks‹resulting in frequent support calls from customers complaining about dead zones, range problems, outages and interference from neighboring wireless networks. Their frustration is reflected in the 25+% return rate for retail wireless products.
Intellon's HomePlug-based technology allows consumers and service providers to share broadband service throughout a house or small business over the existing electrical wiring‹without the setup problems, coverage gaps, interference and related service calls and product returns associated with wireless.
To enable broadband sharing, all consumers or service providers need to do is plug in a HomePlug-embedded cable or DSL modem/router (the power cord carries both the electric power and the Internet), or run an Ethernet cable from the modem/router to a HomePlug-compatible Ethernet adapter plugged into a convenient electrical outlet. With this one simple connection, every electrical outlet in the home or small business becomes an Ethernet port that provides full broadband Internet connectivity.
Connecting new PCs and other devices to the Internet is as easy as plugging them in (either directly if they are HomePlug-embedded or indirectly through a HomePlug-compatible Ethernet or USB adapter if they are not). Mobile customers who need wireless connectivity simply plug a HomePlug-enabled WiFi access point into an electrical outlet near where they need wireless coverage. They can also plug in additional HomePlug-enabled access points to extend coverage wherever it's needed‹on the porch, by the pool or under their favorite tree.
