Service Provider Applications

Intellon is providing solutions currently in volume deployment in more than 40 major service providers around the world, including France Telecom, Comcast, Chung Hwa Telecom, Time Warner Cable, PCCW, and neuf Telecom. HomePlug technology enables simple, reliable, and customer-installable products, making it the perfect platform for many of the applications that service providers offer to their customers. Intellon’s HomePlug-enabled devices can distribute content over customers’ existing powerlines and/or coax wiring, and are remarkably easy to set up and use. Just plug them in and they work.

Intellon’s HomePlug 1.0 with Turbo chipset (the INT5500) is being deployed today by over a dozen service providers for IPTV installations. Before the Turbo solution, these carriers were running new wire (CAT-5/Ethernet cable) to move the standard definition IPTV content from the customer’s broadband modem/gateway to the IP set-to-box in the customer’s home. As services continue to evolve, service providers will deploy Intellon’s 200Mbps HomePlug AV-based IC, to distribute both standard definition and high definition video content over existing in-home electrical wires, ushering in a whole new era of user-friendly entertainment connectivity.

Intellon Corporation is a leader in HomePlug-compliant ICs and product enablement, and has leveraged its technology and expertise to develop solutions to support the specific needs of major operators. Intellon-based solutions offer service providers the ability to reduce operating expenses (OPEX), expedite customer deployments and increase customer satisfaction:

  • Broadband Extension – Major service providers are using Intellon-based HomePlug products to drive more self-installations and to reduce the time required to perform professional installations. When a broadband modem is deployed, whether cable or DSL, a PC in the home may be several rooms away from the nearest cable or phone jack. The traditional method of solving this problem is to send an installer out to the customer’s home, drill holes and fish cables through their walls. This process is disruptive to the customer and can take more than 2 hours to complete. With HomePlug, the end customer or professional installer simply uplugs a HomePlug adapter into the broadband modem and another HomePlug adapter into the PC. With an average of 40+ electrical outlets in an average-size home, an installation that could have taken hours is now reduced to minutes by using the home’s existing powerlines for connectivity.
  • Wireless range extension – When a remote-room device (such as a laptop computer) requires mobile connectivity, a wireless router placed next to the broadband modem may not provide whole-home coverage. Using powerline as the network backbone, a HomePlug-WiFi access point provides a reliable wireless connection wherever there is an electrical outlet, and more importantly, wherever the customer needs it.
  • HomePlug-enabled gateways – For consumers that want to connect more than one PC or other device to their broadband modem, HomePlug-embedded gateways and Ethernet adapters create an instant network backbone in the home. With HomePlug, connectivity is available everywhere the customer needs it—even in remote rooms that wireless alternatives may not reach.
  • Home security/monitoring – The proliferation of broadband connectivity is increasing the demand for home security systems with remote monitoring capability. With Intellon-based HomePlug security cameras, it’s possible to create a self-installable home monitoring system by simply plugging the cameras into convenient electrical outlets. This level of simplicity leads to happy, loyal customers.
  • Whole-house audio – The PC and broadband connection are becoming great sources of music in the home. HomePlug audio devices enable flawless delivery of audio content anywhere, any time.
  • Online gaming in any room - Rather than running CAT-5 cable down the hall and or across the floor, now high speed online gaming can be enjoyed from any outlet in the home – No New WiresTM, no software drivers to install.
  • IPTV – Service providers today are focusing on the “Triple Play” of services to the home—video, data and voice. Cable and satellite operators have been offering high quality television (video) service for many years, but telephone service providers have been limited to voice and data. IPTV (television over IP) enables the telecom provider to offer television service over the higher speed xDSL lines that come into the homes for broadband. Once the video reaches the gateway, the service provider needs high-speed connections to move the content to the televisions within the home. Gateways and set top boxes enabled with Intellon’s HomePlug ICs make this possible using the existing power outlets and/or coax jacks.
  • Video on Demand – Most service providers are currently upgrading their Video on Demand infrastructure (VoD) to include greater title selection and scheduling flexibility. Enhanced VoD offerings often require a bridge between the customer’s broadband gateway and their video set-top-boxes. HomePlug is a very simple and reliable video connectivity solution to bridge these two worlds, and enables the in-home infrastructure to be installed without a truck roll for these improved VoD services.
  • Multi-room DVR Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) are gaining popularity by making recording television content simple and easily retrievable. The HomePlug backbone makes sharing this content from room to room as simple as plugging the televisions in for power.
  • HD video distribution – High Definition (HD) televisions/displays have hit price points that are creating widespread demand for HD content. Intellon has launched its HomePlug AV chipset enabling multiple HD video streams to be sent over existing coax and power lines with enough bandwidth left over for standard definition (SD) video content, broadband sharing, and other networked applications.
